Help: Privileged Listings

Bitzi listing products are on indefinite haitus pending site changes, after which they will return in a different form. Thank you for your interest.

The following information is retained for reference purposes only.

What is a Privileged Listing?

A Privileged Listing is a creative message (see What is the format of a Privileged Listing?) from a party with a special relationship (creator or publisher; see Who may place a Privileged Listing?) to a work (e.g., song, movie, book, program; see What is a "Work"?) digitally encoded in a file or files. A single Privileged Listing may only be applied to files encoding a single work, but may be applied to an arbitary number of files encoding the single work. Example:
  • 100 encodings (different formats, encoder settings, etc.) of "Roxanne" by the Police, created in 1978: A single Privileged Listing may be applied to all 100 encodings of the same work.
  • 1 encoding of "Song A" by "The AB Band" created in 2002 and 1 encoding of "Song B" by "The AB Band" created in 2002: "Song A" and "Song B" are distinct works, so two Privileged Listings are required to apply a listing to both even if the Privileged Listing message content is identical for both.

See also the Privileged Listing product description (includes sample).

What is the format of a Privileged Listing?

On the Bitzi website, a Privileged Listing will appear on a ticket inside of a box 468 pixels wide. Within this box your creative message in a HTML subset that includes links, images and tables (specificially the following tags are allowed: A B I P BR UL OL LI TABLE TR TD IMG CENTER). See the Privileged Listing product description for an example.

Who may place a Privileged Listing?

A party with a special relationship to a work digitally encoded in a file or files. Only two relationships are currently allowed: Creator and Publisher. However, these two roles offer a great deal of flexibility, accomodating film directors, bands, symphonies, authors, music labels, studios, and book publishers to name several work-specific roles that may be described as "creator" or "publisher".

More than one party in the same general (creator or publisher) role may place a Privileged Listing on a ticket so long as both claims are accurate. Example: band and independent songwriter place "creator" Privileged Listings on a ticket describing a file that digitally encodes a song recording.

If you do not qualify to place a Privileged Listing, you may consider placing a Sponsored Link.

What is a "Work"?

A work is a creative unit that may be encapsulated in a digital file. For the purposes of Privileged Listings, a work is identified by Title, Creator, and Date. Examples:
Work (Song)
  • Title: Roxanne
  • Creator: The Police
  • Date: 1978
Work (Album)
  • Title: Outlandos d'Amour
  • Creator: The Police
  • Date: 1978
Work (Movie)
  • Title: The Ballad of Narayama
  • Creator: Shohei Imamura
  • Date: 1982
Work (Book)
  • Title: Siberian Development and East Asia: Threat or Promise
  • Creator: Allen Suess Whiting
  • Date: 1981
Note the difference between the song and album examples. The former could be applied to single song files (e.g., "Police - Roxanne.mp3"), while the latter could be applied to files encoding a full album (e.g., "Police - Ountlandos - Full Album.mp3"). The granularity of the encoded work in each case is different.

How do I create a Privileged Listing?

  1. Find a file that encodes a work you are the creator or publisher of.
  2. Click on "See your message here...".
  3. Click on "add a Privileged Listing".
  4. Fill in the "New Privileged Listing" form. The "Work Title", "Work Creator" and "Work Creation Date" fields may be pre-populated with data already in the catalog. Take care for the accuracy of this data or any you enter or modify.
  5. Click the "Create & Apply Privileged Listing" button.
  6. You will be taken to a confirmation screen which will display what your new Privileged Listing will look like barring further changes. Double check the accuracy of all form fields. If your balance is less than the price of a Privileged Listing, you will be asked to make a deposit before proceding.
  7. Click the "[Confirm] Create & Apply Privileged Listing" button.
  8. You will be taken to a page displaying your new Privileged Listing (and allowing edits). Beneath the display and edit form you will see a list of tickets the Privileged Listing has been applied to (only one at this point). Click on the ticket link and you will see your new Privileged Listing appear on the ticket (if not try reloading the page).

How do I edit a Privileged Listing?

  1. Go to your Privileged Listing management page (linked from your private workspace which itself is linked to in the header of every Bitzi page).
  2. Click on "Edit / View Stats" next to the Privileged Listing you wish to edit.
  3. Effect your desired changes in the "Modify Privileged Listing" form.

  6. Click the "[Confirm] Modify Privileged Listing" button.
  7. You will be taken back to the Privileged Listing page, where you may make further edits if desired. Click on a ticket link under "This Privileged Listing is applied to the following # ticket(s):" to view your changes in the context of a real ticket.

How do I place a Privileged Listing on multiple tickets?

After initially creating a Privileged Listing you will have placed it on a single ticket. To place an existing Privileged Listing on additional tickets:
  1. Find a file that encodes the same work described by your existing ticket (i.e., same title, creator, and date).
  2. Click on "See your message here...".
  3. Click on "add a Privileged Listing".
  4. Select the appropriate Privileged Listing from "Existing Privileged Listings"
  5. Click on "Apply Existing Privileged Listing" button.
  6. Review confirmation page.
  7. Click on "Confirm Privileged Listing" button.
  8. You will be taken to a page displaying the applied Privileged Listing (and allowing edits). Beneath the display and edit form you will see a list of tickets the Privileged Listing has been applied to, including the addition you just made. Click on the ticket link and you will see your new Privileged Listing appear on the ticket (if not try reloading the page).
Note that in order to place Privileged Listings on tickets for files digitally encoding different works you must purchase multiple Privileged Listings: one for each work, even if the Privileged Listing message is identical in each case.

How do I remove a Privileged Listing from a ticket?

  1. Go to your Privileged Listing management page (linked from your private workspace which itself is linked to in the header of every Bitzi page).
  2. Click on "Edit / View Stats" next to the Privileged Listing you wish to remove.
  3. You will be taken to a page displaying the selected Privileged Listing (and allowing edits). Beneath the display and edit form you will see a list of tickets the Privileged Listing has been applied to. Uncheck the "Listing Active" checkbox for the ticket(s) you wish to remove the Privileged Listing from.
  4. Click the "Update Privileged Listing/Ticket Status" button.
  5. You will be taken back to the selected Privileged Listing's page. Notice that the "Listing Active" box will be unselected for the ticket(s) from which you have removed the Privileged Listing.
